Figurehead -
Bride of the Ocean

Figureheads on ships see many parts of the world. The poet J. Slauerhoff wrote a poem: "Figurehead: the soul".
By making a compilation I created a new poem (see below).
With the real figurehead of the Norwegian ship the Christian Radich it was my inspiration to make my "Bride".

Dit is mijn lot
Gebeeldhouwd voor de boeg,
Liefkozingen van alle golven
Schuimen over mijn borst
Geen man heeft machtiger
Zijn bruid bezocht

Over zijn diepte zwevend
Bleef mijn beeld in zijn borst begrensd
Geen bruid huwt met haar vorst
Als ik met ’t schip
Dat mij meetroont
Vorstlijk vrijgevig…

Translated:

This is my fate
sculpted for the bow
loved by the waves
foamed my breast
No man has with more power
sought his bride
hovering above his depth
my sculpture bordered by his breast
No bride marries her monarch
like me on my ship
which takes me
generous like a sovereign...
