Red is the colour of fire, and refers to the Holy Spirit. Therefore red is the colour which belongs to Whitsunday.
The most wellknown part of the Bible about Pentecost is written down in Acts 2: "when the day of Pentecost had come, they [the apostles] were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." (Translation American Bible Society, New York 1946/1971.)
But when Jesus was still on earth he spoke about the Spirit to come: "And i will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever, even the Spirit of truth, (...) for he dwells with you, and will be in you. (...) In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. (...)But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Farther will send in my name, he will teach you all the things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you..."
